Breastfeeding Services
Breastfeeding is a truly wonderful way to feed your baby.
It is natural to have LOTS of questions at the beginning and at various stages along the way. Allied Pediatrics supports breastfeeding and is excited to offer several breastfeeding initiatives.
The Allied Breastfeeding Center is available to all women and babies. You do not need to be a member of Allied Pediatrics to benefit from the breastfeeding support we offer.
The Breastfeeding Medicine Center of Allied Pediatrics offers the following services:
- Telephone/email support
- Office visits
- Home visits
- Extended telephone consultations
- Breast pump rentals and sales
- Prenatal Classes
- Support Groups
Allied Pediatrics offers a breastfeeding triage hotline which connects you to caring, qualified breastfeeding professionals who will meet the needs of both mommy and baby. Our lactation consultants will help you navigate your breastfeeding needs. They are available to schedule phone consults, home consults, office consults and coordinate pump rentals. - Office visits:
Dr. Lauren Macaluso and Dr. Jennifer Shaer are pediatricians who specialize in breastfeeding medicine. To schedule a breastfeeding visit with Drs. Macaluso or Shaer call the office location where you would like to be seen. Dr. Macaluso is in New Hyde Park. Dr. Shaer is in Riverhead.
Most insurance plans are accepted. Some plans will require a referral.
Our staff will gladly help you with this over the phone. Office visits are scheduled for baby and mother, so be prepared to pay a copay for both.
For your convenience, you can download registration forms in advance of your visit. Most importantly, make yourself comfortable…bring a pillow and don't forget the baby!

Allied Pediatrics now also offers breastfeeding support groups.
Need sleep? Going back to work? Starting solids? Teething? Expecting?
This group is for you. Meet other moms. Learn from and support each other with the help of an experienced lactation consultant. Lots of time for individual attention.
Bring your baby. Bring a friend (non-APNY moms welcome.) $10/session
Sign up on-line. Schedule available on-line. If you don't see a location near you, call the hotline to inquire. Groups are continually forming.

Extended Telephone Consultations:
Some issues do not require an office visit. If appropriate, the lactation consultant will offer you an extended telephone consultation saving you and your baby a trip to the doctor! Extended telephone consultations are $50.

- Prenatal Breastfeeding Class:
This is an interactive class for pregnant women and their partners offered in the third trimester. This class reviews the anatomy and physiology of lactation and the "how to" of getting off to the right start. Parents are taught how to feel confident when their newborn is nursing and just as importantly, how to recognize when feeding is not going well.
